Held on the weekend of December 2–3, 2017, at the scenic Rock Musicarium near Islamabad’s Rawal Lake, the Art Langar Festival was a groundbreaking celebration of art, music, and human connection. Conceived and directed by renowned folk artist Arieb Azhar, the festival offered a powerful new platform for creativity in the capital—fusing cultural expression with a spirit of generosity inspired by the traditional concept of langar, a communal meal offered freely to all. This first edition of Art Langar was more than just a music or art event—it was a living, breathing example of how art can feed both body and soul. The two-day festival featured a dynamic mix of art installations, musical performances, collaborations, and open dialogue, all grounded in a deep ethos of inclusivity and social consciousness. Attendees were welcomed by striking visual installations, interactive art spaces, and an eclectic mix of craft stalls showcasing heritage items from across Pakistan. On the music stage, an extraordinary lineup unfolded: from the spiritual sounds of the Shah Jo Raag Fakirs of Bhit Shah and Mai Nimaani, to the electric energy of Jasim Haider & the Pindi Boys, Malang Party, Farhad Humayun & Overload, and the trance-inducing rhythms of Akhtar Chanal Zehri. The crowd rejoiced late into the night, warmed by bonfires and moved by spontaneous drum circles, culminating in a rousing performance by Pappu Saeen as part of the Langar Jam. Beyond the performances, Art Langar offered moments of quiet impact. A donation box set up on the first day funded a meal for children from the Mashaal School, reinforcing the event’s core message: that culture and compassion go hand in hand.
